French Bronze Birthday Cake

Last week I was in a design rut when it came to a friends birthday cake. I knew it had to have a French feel since we were dining at the fabulous Chez Vincent in Winter Park! I wanted to use turquoise and bronze reminiscent of the Parisian rooftops and metro.

After an agonizingly uninspired Google search and an quick education that real bronze is actually a brown-black shade of green, not the shiny red-copper I remember......I only had a turquoise two tier hexagon cake and nothing else, then I saw "it!"

I saw some favorite camellias I made last year, along with some extra flowers and leaves that were left over from a different project.

I looked at my leftover florals, then looked at my bronze paint and I took the leap!

There is nothing better than great friends, great food and great cake!
The Sugar Suite has a great MENU, but we love it when people want to customize their flavor. This cake was Mint Chocolate cake with Baileys and white chocolate buttercream, I know I always say this.... but this is my new favorite flavor!

Bon Appetite!

Chinese Take-out

This project made me hungry, but not for cake! This Chinese take-out themed birthday wouldn't have been complete with out a pagoda pail of cake and fortune cookies that predict a very happy birthday.

iPhone Cake

This iPhone was made as a grooms cake to reflect the groom's love of his phone! The bride took a snapshot of his desktop and sent it to me from his phone (sneaky!) so that I could create the apps exactly like the ones on his phone! You can barely see it in this photo, but he had 52 emails!!! Woah, that stresses me out just thinking about it!

Florida Marlin Cake

This cake was created for an avid fisherman, so I knew the markings had to be somewhat accurate. I still wanted to create a "cartoon" like cake in fear that no one would want to eat a cake that looks like a real fish, regardless of the sweet smell :) This cake was also my first international cake, headed to The Bahamas! It made it through the flight {thanks to the carrier's careful eye} in perfect condition!

Star Sparkle Birthday Cake

For this 80th birthday cake, the client wanted something with a lot of sparkle! She sent me her inspiration piece, which was a small part of the party invitation (which happened to have a cake sketch). My job was to bring the sketch to life. I made eight stars (for the eight decades she was celebrating) in fondant and attached them to sugar flower wires that were then spray painted gold. I used a special technique to achieve a clean presentation for placing the large gold dragees. I first made the mistake of pressing the dragee into the chilled buttercream, which then displaced some of the buttercream into messy "waves" around the dragee. I then found that if I chiseled out a small hole and placed the dragee inside, it kept the buttercream perfectly smooth and held the dragee in place. Very fun project, thanks again!

Filgree Birthday Cake

Stylin' cake for a stylin' lady! This cake was made for a childhood friend's mother, who I affectionately call Mrs. Black. She is absolutely so full of life and love, I hope I am half as lucky as her on my 60th birthday!
Oh, by the way we tried out a new flavor, vanilla-rum buttercream! I wanted to make something more than just vanilla, and rum definitely did the trick! It gives the cake a more sophisticated flavor, for this very sophisticated lady!

Airplane Cake

This airplane cake was created for a JetBlue Pilot, celebrating his birthday!
He was thrilled with the accurate number of passenger windows on the plane (I totally meant to do that! :))

Steve Prouse Louis Vuitton Cake

I love it when two completely different styles combine beautifully. Steve Sprouse was an American fashion designer and artist that had a funky, rockstar flare. These grafitti roses sit atop the traditional LV pattern (and other styles available), and make for a beautiful, espressive bag. ... and this one is cake. The flower was hand painted on fondant, and the sculpted cake was covered in milk chocolate fondant. The straps were made with a sugar flower wire, covered in tinted vanilla fondant. The LV patterns were made by hand piping a goldy-brown royal icing. I get warm-fuzzies looking at this cake, I think because it was one of the more artisitc cakes I have made. Thanks to Brittany for having great style and bringing this idea into the bakery!

Crawfish Boil!

This cake was made for an adorably cute pregnant-with-twins lady. She is originally from Louisianna and has a fantastic sense of humor, so when her friends began planning her suprise baby shower, they knew the cake had to be over the top. I made all sugar crawfish, lemons, red potatoes and corn on the cobb. The cake itself is the pot and put sugar prints of babies on the side to recognize the little ones as the guests of honor.
